The building program is the written record of what the house must do before anyone draws a wall. A primary residence for two adults with college-age children who visit on weekends might target 1,600 to 1,800 square feet, with the kitchen, dining, and great rooms designed as one open volume and the bedrooms kept compact upstairs.

The program also records how the family actually lives. A household that entertains often will design a home bar into the great room. A family that gardens, fishes, and keeps animals will budget a mudroom with 8 feet of counter space and cabinets above for the gear that never makes it past the door.

Prioritize Rooms Before You Assign Square Footage

Not every room deserves equal square footage. The kitchen, dining, and great rooms take the largest share of an open-plan log home because they carry daily traffic, meals, and gatherings. Design the Loft and the Great Room Together

The loft is where a log home earns its drama. Placed above the great room, it adds headroom, catches light through tall glass, and gives a second-floor perch over the main space. Designing the two together matters because the loft changes the wall heights, roof lines, and window placement of the room below. Choose Fire-Smart Materials and Spacing

Fire risk is decided the same way.
