Know Your Tile Backer Options

Tile backer is the dimensionally stable base layer that keeps ceramic and porcelain tile from cracking. Even slight movement in the building structure telegraphs through to the tile, so the backer must be rigid, flat, and free of flex. Three families dominate: cementitious backer units, gypsum-core boards, and membrane systems.

Cementitious Backer Units (CBU)

Cement board is a mineral-based panel, commonly 30 by 60 inches, sold in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thicknesses. Install the Backer With the Right Details

The setting material is the last line of defense. The mortar must bond the tile to the backer and hold up to continuous moisture without breaking down.
