Joint Compound: Powder vs Pre-Mixed

Joint compound is a powdery mixture of gypsum and binders that is mixed with water, or it comes pre-mixed in buckets. Powder is cheaper per gallon, stores almost forever, and lets you mix only what you need. Pre-mixed compound is ready to use and ideal for quick patches, but it skins over and spoils if the bucket is left open.

Choosing the right compound type

All-purpose compound handles tape, fill, and texture in one product. Lightweight compound sands faster but has less strength for embedding tape. Topping compound is for the final coats only, and setting-type powder hardens by chemical reaction, which makes it ideal for filling deep gaps without shrinkage.

Shelf life and storage

Pre-mixed compound lasts about nine months unopened and far less once the bucket is opened, because air dries it from the top. Powder lasts for years if it stays dry. Store both above freezing, since frozen compound separates and will not re-mix smoothly.

Screws, Nails, and Outside Corners

Drywall screws are the primary fastener because they grip the stud and resist popping. Standard 1 1/4-inch screws suit 1/2-inch board on wood studs, while 1 5/8-inch screws are for 5/8-inch board or double layers. Screws should dimple the paper without tearing it, and the driver’s clutch depth setting controls that bite.

Drywall nails still have a place. They hang panels faster than screws, and crews use them for initial hanging before adding screws at the edges. The trade-off is nail pops: as the wood dries and shrinks, nails back out and push the compound loose, which is why screws dominate in finished work.

Outside corners need protection because a bare compound edge is fragile. Metal corner bead is nailed or screwed over the corner and coated with mud; paper-faced bead flexes less and resists cracking. Screw spacing rules

Space screws about 16 inches apart along each stud, with screws at the panel edges every 8 inches. Keep edge screws at least 3/8 inch from the panel edge so they do not blow out the gypsum core. On ceilings, tighten the pattern to 12 inches along the framing.

Shims for crooked studs
