Heartwood vs Sapwood: What It Means for Timber and Lumber

Every board in a lumber pile comes from a different part of the tree, and that origin decides how the wood behaves for decades. The inner core, called heartwood, and the outer band, called sapwood, differ in color, moisture content, decay resistance, and how they accept finishes and preservatives. Homeowners who can read the difference choose better decking, siding, flooring, and trim, and they avoid the surprise of a rot-prone board hidden in the middle of a clean stack. The distinction shows up wherever wood is used, which is why it matters when you compare solid hardwood, engineered wood, and bamboo flooring for a room.

What Heartwood and Sapwood Actually Are

A tree trunk is built in concentric layers. The cambium, a thin layer just under the bark, produces new wood each year, and the outermost rings form the sapwood, which transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves. As the tree matures, the inner rings stop conducting and become heartwood, the darker, denser core that supports the tree’s weight.

The Biology Behind the Color Change

The color shift is chemical, not structural. As cells convert to heartwood, they fill with extractives such as tannins, oils, and resins that give species their characteristic colors and odors. The cell walls themselves are similar in strength, which is why heartwood and sapwood of the same species test close in stiffness and hardness, but the extractives change everything else: moisture behavior, decay resistance, and finishing.

How to Tell Them Apart

  • Color: heartwood is usually darker, though the contrast ranges from dramatic in walnut to subtle in some pines.
  • Weight: sapwood in a freshly sawn board feels lighter and often shows higher moisture content.

Reading the End Grain

The end of a log tells the whole story. The boundary between the pale outer band and the darker core runs roughly parallel to the growth rings, and the pattern is visible on any clean cut. That end-grain read is the first thing to check when a board’s identity matters, such as before you tile over a wood deck, where moisture movement in the substrate decides how long the installation lasts.

Durability and Decay Resistance

Decay resistance comes almost entirely from the heartwood. Fungi and insects attack wood that stays moist, and the extractives in the heartwood of durable species poison or repel the organisms that would otherwise break the wood down. Sapwood, in every species, has little natural resistance, which is why a sapwood board can rot in a wet deck while a heartwood board beside it survives for years.

Extractives Are the Difference

Think of extractives as the tree’s built-in preservative. Western red cedar and white oak heartwood resist decay well enough for decades of outdoor service, while the sapwood of those same species is rated perishable. The pattern repeats in every row: durable heartwood, perishable sapwood. When a species is sold as naturally rot-resistant, the label means the heartwood, and boards with heavy sapwood content do not share that guarantee.

Where the Weak Wood Shows Up First

Sapwood fails first where water lingers: deck board ends, post bases, sill plates, and trim joints. Small defects in those zones, such as checks and nail pops, are routine, and the repair depends on the product: knowing the difference between wood putty and wood filler decides whether a fix dries hard enough to sand smooth or stays flexible for a painted surface.

How Treatment and Preservation Work

Pressure-treated lumber works because of sapwood. Preservatives injected under pressure travel through the wood’s cell structure, and sapwood accepts them readily while the heartwood of most species resists penetration. A treated pine board is therefore mostly sapwood, chosen at the mill for that reason.

Preservatives Penetrate Sapwood, Not Heartwood

The practical result is a trade-off. Sapwood takes the treatment, giving the board decades of protection, but if the treatment is breached by a cut, a fastener hole, or end trimming on site, the exposed interior is the same perishable wood. Cut ends on treated lumber should be brushed with a field treatment, and holes drilled through treated posts deserve the same.

What This Means for Deck Life

Deck longevity is a numbers game between retention, exposure, and grade. The treatment labels carry real meaning. Swapping one for the other shortens the service life, no matter how good the story on the label.

Appearance, Grading, and Cost

Heartwood and sapwood also split the market by looks. The richer color of heartwood commands a premium in species like cedar and redwood, and buyers pay for it in clear-heart grades. Sapwood, paler and usually cheaper, still performs fine indoors, where decay pressure is low.

Color and Grain Differences

Clear finishes amplify the difference. A cedar ceiling in all-heart boards shows warm, even color, while sapwood streaks lighten the field. Stains and opaque paints make the difference disappear, which is why paint-grade siding tolerates sapwood and natural-finish siding does not.

All-Heart Grades Cost More

Grade rules put a price on heart content. Cedar shingles, for example, are graded partly on heartwood percentage, with the top grades reserved for all-heart material, and the same logic runs through siding, decking, and trim. Inside the envelope, sapwood is rarely a problem. Flooring, trim, and furniture see controlled humidity, and the pale color can even be a design asset. Outside, the same board is an invitation to rot, so exterior decks, siding, and posts should be heartwood species, treated sapwood, or both. Work through the choice in four steps:

  1. Look at the end grain and note how much of the board is sapwood.
  2. Match the exposure: exterior and ground-contact uses demand durable heartwood or treated lumber.
  3. Check the grade stamp and retention label before you buy.
  4. Budget for the premium where the wood is visible and the risk is high.

Old Growth and Historic Wood

Older buildings show the value of durable heartwood. The repair of historic wood windows often succeeds because old-growth heartwood survived decades of weather where a modern sapwood-heavy board would have failed, and matching the replacement stock to the original is part of the job.

Siding and Shingles

Exterior cladding is where the heartwood premium pays off most visibly.
