Keeping Lumber Dry and Straight

Moisture is the enemy of stored lumber. Wet stock can warp, cup, and twist as it dries, and boards stored on the ground pick up rot and insect damage. A yard protects its inventory with three tools: covered storage, off-ground racking, and air circulation. The slab under the racks has to shed water, and the racks themselves have to keep every board off the concrete.

The building envelope matters too. How Millwork Fits Into a Yard

Millwork is the finish side of the lumber business. Doors, windows, moulding, stair parts, and cabinet components arrive prefinished or ready for final cutting, and they need dry, clean, protected storage because a dented door jamb is a total loss. Running a Yard During Construction

Expansions happen in stages for a reason. The existing store keeps serving customers, the new warehouse goes up beside it, and inventory moves over as sections are completed. Temporary fencing keeps the public out of the work zone, dust control protects the millwork, and the receiving crew keeps the flow moving while the site crew pours footings twenty feet away.

The product mix shifts while the work goes on.
