Walk through any lumberyard and you will hear a handful of words repeated: knot, wane, bow, grade. The vocabulary matters more than small talk. Knowing these terms matters whether you buy from a retailer or plan on harvesting and using your own lumber from forest to framing. This glossary covers the defect names, moisture terms, and grading words that show up on grade stamps and in everyday job-site conversation.
Warp: Bow, Crook, Cup, and Twist
Warp is any deviation from a true, flat, plane surface, and it comes in four named forms. If you are harvesting your own lumber, warp is the first thing to check after milling, because it decides whether a board can be used at all.
Bow is a deviation flatwise from a straight line drawn from one end of a board to the other, the classic smile shape when a 2×4 lies on its wide face. Crook is the same curve measured edgewise, when the board lies on its narrow edge. Cup is a deviation across the face, from one edge to the other, so the board forms a shallow trough. Twist, the worst of the four, rotates the board along its length so the corners no longer sit in one plane.
How warp is measured
Graders measure bow, crook, and cup at the point of greatest distance from the straight line, and the allowed amount shrinks as the grade improves. A No. 2 board can show noticeably more warp than a Select grade, and kiln drying reduces warp by setting the wood before it reaches you.
Warp vs. straightness
A bowed stud can be forced into place but will fight the fasteners and push drywall out of plane. Straightness checks at the yard, one board at a time, save far more time than sorting on the wall.
For joinery, warp is more than a cosmetic nuisance. A bowed board fights clamps and pulls joints open, a cupped deck board collects water, and a twisted stud makes wall corners drift out of square. That is why framing lumber gets graded on warp before it is ever graded on looks.
Preventing warp
- Store lumber flat, off the ground, with stickers between the layers.
- Keep stock under cover and away from direct sun.
- Buy kiln-dried material when the project needs dimensional stability.
- Reject heavily twisted boards at the yard rather than at the job site.

Knots, Checks, Splits, and Other Defects
Defects drive the price difference between grades, and knowing which ones you can live with can save money on wood for DIY projects. A knot in a fence board is cosmetic; the same knot in a stair stringer is a structural problem.
Knot classification
A knot is a portion of a branch that became incorporated into the lumber. Graders sort knots by form (round, oval, spike), size (pin, small, medium, large), and quality (sound, tight, encased, loose). Sound, tight knots are solid and firmly fixed; encased knots are surrounded by bark; loose knots can fall out and leave a hole.
Grading rules express knot size as a fraction of the face width. A knot that occupies one-third of a 2×6 face is legal in No. 2 but not in Select, and spike knots that run across the narrow edge can reduce strength more than round knots of the same area. When a member carries a load, read the knot rules before you read the price.
Checks vs. splits
A check is a separation that runs across or through the annual growth rings, normally caused by seasoning. Checks are rated surface, through, small, medium, or large. A split goes through the piece to the opposite or adjoining surface, the result of the wood tearing apart, and splits at board ends are the most common reason a board gets trimmed.
Wane, pith, and pitch
Wane is bark, or a lack of wood, along an edge or corner. Pith is the small soft core at the structural center of a log. Pitch is a well-defined accumulation of resin in the wood cells, and a pitch streak is rated from very small to very large.
Other terms on the grading sheet
- Burl: a distortion of grain from abnormal growth, assessed in relation to knots.
- Pocket: a well-defined opening between the rings of annual growth.
- Sapwood: the outer growth layers that carry the sap.
- Heartwood: the inner core of nonliving cells, often darker in color.
Moisture Content and Drying
Moisture content (MC) is the weight of water in wood expressed as a percentage of the weight of the oven-dry wood. Freshly sawn lumber can sit at 80 percent MC or higher; kiln-dried framing typically ships at 19 percent or less. The same targets apply whether the stock is kiln-dried at a mill or air-dried on your own site.
Measuring moisture content
Pin-type moisture meters drive two small probes into the wood and read electrical resistance; pinless meters scan the surface. The oven-dry method, weighing a sample, drying it, and weighing it again, is the laboratory standard. For construction checks, a meter reading within a couple of points of the target is usually good enough.
Moisture content drives fastener hold, paint adhesion, and dimensional stability. Nails driven into wet wood lose grip as the board dries and shrinks, and paint applied over wet wood blisters when trapped moisture tries to escape. Matching the lumber’s MC to the site conditions prevents both problems.

Equilibrium moisture content
Wood constantly exchanges moisture with the air until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding humidity. A board that is dry in the shop picks up moisture on a humid job site, so let material acclimate in the space where it will be installed.
Grain, Heartwood, and Growth Characteristics
Grain describes the fibers in the wood and their direction, size, arrangement, appearance, and quality. The same discipline of sorting by measurable limits applies to other materials, including the grading of aggregates and grading limits used in concrete work.
Grain types
Vertical grain and edge grain appear when logs are quarter-sawn; rift grain falls between flat and vertical; flat grain and slash grain come from plain sawing. Spiral grain twists around the trunk, and diagonal grain runs at an angle to the edge. Each pattern changes how the board moves and how it takes finish.
Heartwood vs. sapwood
Heartwood is the inner core of the trunk, made of nonliving annual rings; in many species it is noticeably darker. Sapwood is the outer layer that carries water. Heartwood resists decay better in species like cedar and redwood, while sapwood is more permeable and stains more easily.
Summerwood and springwood
Springwood forms early in the growing season with large, thin-walled cells; summerwood forms later with smaller, denser cells. The contrast between the two gives species like oak their visible grain and affects hardness.
Appearance grades lean on grain and color. Vertical-grain flooring wears more evenly than flat-grain because the hard summerwood bands are not exposed in wide strips, and heartwood color is a selling point in species like redwood and mahogany. For structural grades, grain slope matters more than color: steep diagonal grain reduces strength the way a cut notch does.
Inspecting Lumber Before You Buy
Grade rules put numbers on the words in this glossary, and the same quality assurance habits that guide a custom build apply to every stick you buy.
The 10 percent rule
When a grade rule says occasional pieces, it means not more than 10 percent of the pieces in a parcel or shipment may carry that characteristic. One bowed stud in a bundle of ten is a normal part of the grade; five bowed studs means the parcel is off-spec.
The bargain bin at the back of the yard is where grading knowledge pays off. Mixed-grade bundles carry defects the stickers do not advertise, so sort by the same rules you would use on a full-price stack. Two minutes of sighting down boards can save a trip back to the yard.
Inspection checklist
- Sight down each board for bow, crook, and twist before loading.
- Check both ends for splits and scan the faces for surface checks.
- Look for wane on the corners and judge how much you can trim or hide.
- Take a moisture reading on a few boards from the middle of the stack.
- Read the grade stamp and confirm the species and grade match the invoice.
- Buy 5 to 10 percent extra when the project tolerances are tight.
Putting the Glossary to Work
Choosing wood construction materials by species, properties, and grading standards gets easier when you can name what you see. The stamp on a 2×4 carries the whole story: species group, grade, moisture condition, and mill.
Reading a grade stamp
S-P-F No. 2 KD-HT translates to a spruce-pine-fir species group, No. 2 grade, kiln-dried, heat-treated. S-GRN means surface-dry or green, and HT marks the heat treatment required for shipping. Grade designations such as Select, No. 1, No. 2, and Stud set the size and number of permitted defects.
Species changes the calculus. Spruce-pine-fir bundles are cheap and light, Douglas fir and southern pine carry higher strength values, and cedar or redwood cost more for decay resistance without a paint schedule. Match the species to the exposure, then let the grade control the defects.
Where defects meet grades
A No. 2 board allows larger knots, more wane, and more warp than a No. 1. For framing, No. 2 is the workhorse; for visible trim, move up a grade. The glossary pays for itself the first time you walk a stack and walk away from the wrong boards.
