Manufactured stone veneer has moved from a specialty product to a standard exterior option over the past two decades. A house that would need a deeper footing and engineered framing can proceed on standard details, and crews can work without the heavy equipment that natural stone requires on taller walls.

Where the Installed Price Diverges

Regional labor rates move the installed number more than the material price does. In high-cost metro markets, labor can reach 60 percent of the installed total, which makes the faster slim profile even more attractive. In rural markets, labor is cheaper and the material gap matters more, so full-size stone stays competitive.

Aesthetics now overlap as well. Weathered and reclaimed looks are reshaping residential exterior design, and used-texture brick veneers with aged finishes sell in the same neighborhoods as slim stone. Designers can assemble a matched pallet of materials rather than choosing between a modern product and a traditional one.

Structural Support and Flashing Details

Veneer is a facing, not a structure, and the building has to carry its weight. On single-story walls, the foundation and framing handle the load. On multi-story work, the veneer needs support at each floor line so it does not stack its full weight on the wall below. Shelf angles, lintels, and movement joints each do a specific job, and skipping any of them produces cracks and water entry.

Modern shelf angle systems handle both structural support and thermal performance, which matters when the veneer wraps a conditioned wall. The angle has to carry the veneer load while the insulation layer stays continuous, and the connection detail has to absorb thermal movement without telegraphing cracks to the finish.

Details That Never Get Skimped
