These seams appear wherever drywall is cut to length: at the ends of sheets, around window and door openings, and anywhere a panel is trimmed to fit. The two full-thickness edges meet on a stud, and the tape and mud sit proud of the wall surface. How a Tapered Joint Is Formed

The long edges of standard drywall panels are milled thinner during manufacturing, with the taper running about 2 inches wide along each edge. Choose the Tape First

Paper tape is the standard choice for butt joints because it bonds with the mud and resists tearing. Fiberglass mesh tape is self-adhesive and faster to apply, but it needs a setting-type compound underneath to stay flat over a full-thickness seam. For a joint that has to last, paper tape over a bed coat of all-purpose compound is the most forgiving route.

The Five-Coat Sequence

  1. Apply a thin bed coat of compound over the seam, press paper tape into it, and scrape off the excess with a 6-inch knife.
  2. Let the bed coat dry, then apply a fill coat feathered 6 to 8 inches past the seam on each side.
  3. After it dries, apply a second fill coat feathered 12 to 16 inches out with a wider knife.
  4. Apply a finish coat feathered 18 to 24 inches out, keeping the pressure light at the edges so the mud tapers to nothing.
  5. Sand with 120-grit paper, then inspect the seam under a raking light before priming.
