How to Get Rid of Porch Mildew

Porch mildew shows up as dark gray or black patches on timbers, deck boards, railings, and siding, and it tends to appear right after a wet stretch of weather. A snowy winter followed by a rainy spring leaves exterior wood damp for weeks, which is exactly the window mildew needs to take hold. The patch you see is only part of the story. Mildew sits on top of a finish, while mold can work its way deeper into the wood fibers, so the key differences between mold and mildew should shape how you plan the treatment. Before you grab a cleaner or a pressure washer, you need to know which layer the growth is living in and what your porch finish can tolerate.

First, Find Out Where the Mildew Is

The same dark patch can mean two very different problems. On a stained porch, mildew may be sitting on top of the stain, or it may have formed underneath the finish where the wood stayed wet for months. Treating the wrong layer wastes time and leaves the growth intact, so start with a bleach test that takes about a minute.

  1. Mix one part household bleach with three parts water in a small cup.
  2. Dip a cotton swab into the solution.
  3. Dab the swab on the affected area and watch what happens.
  4. Note how long the bleach takes to lift the discoloration.

Reading the 30 second rule

If the bleach removes the mildew right away, the growth is on the surface and a routine cleaning will handle it. If the bleach lifts the discoloration only after 30 seconds or more of contact, the mildew sits under the surface of the stain or finish. It breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and soda ash when it meets water, dissolves mildew, lifts the gray discoloration it leaves behind, and does not attack the binder in a quality wood stain the way chlorine bleach can.

Mildew is not picky about where it grows. The same warm, damp conditions that produce mildew in a bathroom can coat a porch ceiling in a single wet spring, and the same oxygen based chemistry that clears bathroom growth works on exterior wood.

Why chlorine is only for the test
