How to Install Window Casing: Measuring, Cutting, and Nailing Trim

Window trim is the frame that makes a rough opening look finished. Casing covers the gap between the window unit and the wall, hides shims and insulation, and gives the room a crisp line at every window. The job is within reach of a careful DIYer: it takes accurate measuring, square cuts, and a handful of fasteners. Renting a miter saw for a day beats buying one for a single window, and many lumberyards cut casing to length for a small fee.

For exterior work on masonry, the same layout logic applies to PVC exterior casing installed against a brick wall, where the reveal is set against the window frame itself.

The reveal and miter math

For a standard 45-degree miter, measure the head casing as the jamb width plus two reveals. Measure each side casing as the jamb height plus one reveal plus the height of the miter. When the reveal is 3/8 inch, the head piece is 3/4 inch longer than the opening, and each side piece is the jamb height plus 3/8 inch plus the miter length. Write the numbers on the back of each board before cutting.

Walls are rarely perfectly square, and out-of-square openings expose gaps at the miters. Check the corners with a framing square before cutting. If a corner is off by more than 1/8 inch, split the difference between the two pieces, or cut one miter at 44.5 degrees and the other at 45.5 degrees so the joint closes against the wall.

On exterior windows, flashing tape wraps the sill, jambs, and head in shingle-lap order so water sheds from top to bottom.

Exterior versus interior casing

Interior casing has no weather duties, but the gap between the window unit and the rough opening still needs sealing. Low-expansion foam fills the gap for air sealing, and a vapor barrier or caulk bead manages moisture on the interior side. Exterior casing adds a drip cap or a beveled head piece so runoff drops clear of the joint.

Foam should fill no more than half the depth of the gap, because expanding foam can bow the jamb when packed tight. Let the foam cure, trim the excess flush with a knife, and install the casing against a flat, square surface.

The reveal and the miter size stay constant from window to window, so the first one you build sets the pattern for the rest of the house.

The installation sequence

  1. Dry-fit the three pieces and adjust the miters until the joints close.
  2. Nail the head casing first, through the jamb, into the framing behind it.
  3. Check the head with a level and adjust before moving on.
  4. Nail the side casings, working from the head down.
  5. Set nails below the surface with a nail set and fill with wood filler.
  6. Caulk the inside corners and the seam between casing and wall.

Nail placement

Nails belong where the trim meets the jamb and where it crosses framing. Spacing them every 16 inches along the length, with a pair near each end, holds the casing flat. Avoid nailing through the sash track, and never pin the casing to the window unit itself; the unit needs room to expand and contract. A thin bead of exterior wood glue on the miter faces keeps joints closed through seasonal movement. Wipe the squeeze-out immediately, then clamp or tape the corners until the glue sets.

Preassembled Casing and Exterior Trim Options

Site-built casing gives unlimited flexibility, but preassembled casing cuts installation time dramatically. Factory-assembled frames arrive with the corners already joined, so the field work shrinks to shimming, leveling, and nailing.

Site-built trim wins on custom shapes, deep jambs, and historic profiles, and it is easier to match to existing trim in a remodel. Preassembled units win on speed and consistency: a two-person crew can hang and case a window in about an hour, and the factory joints rarely open. Many exterior systems combine preassembled casing with integrated flashing for a complete weather barrier.

When ordering preassembled units, measure the jamb width first: standard units fit 4-9/16-inch and 6-9/16-inch jambs, and ordering the wrong depth means shimming the frame out or cutting it down. For a re-trim of an existing window, pull one piece of old casing and match its profile so the new trim reads as part of the room.
