Hardwood generally costs more than laminate reproductions, but price is only one factor: aesthetics and durability matter just as much, and for many owners the look of natural wood cannot be beaten. The options span solid hardwood, engineered, parquet, and bamboo, each with different cost, lifespan, and refinishing behavior, so the first step is matching the material to the room that will hold it.

Floor Systems: Subfloor, Underlayment, and Finish

The floor you walk on is a three-layer system: a structural subfloor, an underlayment or moisture barrier, and the finish flooring. Skipping any layer is a common cause of squeaks, cupping, and premature wear, and the failure usually shows up years after the warranty ends.

Subfloor Requirements for Wood

Wood flooring needs a subfloor that is flat, dry, and firmly fastened. Most manufacturers require no more than 1/4 inch of variation over 10 feet, and the subfloor moisture content should sit in the 6 to 9 percent range before installation. A matte or satin finish hides wear better than a high-gloss one, and a textured face such as hand-scraped or wire-brushed hides scratches that a smooth surface would reveal.

Fastening, Paper, and Moisture Details

Installation details decide whether a beautiful floor stays beautiful. Fastener choice, fastener spacing, and the moisture barrier underneath all follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and deviations show up as squeaks or popped boards.

Choosing a Fastener and a Nailer

The difference between hand nailers and pneumatic flooring nailers is speed and consistency. Pneumatic tools drive every fastener to the same depth, which matters over thousands of nails; hand nailing works for small jobs and repairs but slows a whole-house install.

Moisture Barriers and Building Paper

Over a concrete slab, a vapor barrier is mandatory. Over a wood subfloor, many manufacturers call for building paper to control moisture from below and to quiet the floor.

Seal every seam with the tape the manufacturer specifies, and run the barrier 4 to 6 inches up the walls so splash and spills cannot wick into the floor edges. The same detail protects a floor built over a crawl space, where ground moisture can otherwise travel straight into the planks.

Staple vs. Cleat

Cleats hold better in hardwood and back out less over time; staples cost less, install faster, and work well in softer species. Match the fastener to the species and the subfloor type.

The last step before the first plank is the cheapest insurance on the job. Confirm the subfloor is clean, flat, dry, and within the moisture target, and many installers lay tar paper under wood flooring to block vapor and quiet footfall. Then follow the fastening schedule for every row, leave the specified expansion gap at the walls, and let the floor settle before heavy furniture moves in. A floor chosen on lifespan and refinishing data, installed with the right moisture control, will still take a finish decades from now.
