How to Measure and Improve Your Shed Building Processes

Every shed shop runs on processes, whether the owner writes them down or not. The crew that frames a 10 by 16 building in one order, installs sheathing in another, and trims it out in a third is following a process. The question is whether that process is effective. Without measurement, nobody can answer it. Guessing that the shop is productive is not the same as knowing it, and the gap shows up as long lead times, rework, and frustrated customers. Track Time by Stage, Not by Guess

Yet many shops quote lead times of two to four weeks. The difference between the theoretical build time and the quoted lead time is process time: waiting, queueing, and rework. A shop that never measures this gap cannot explain it, and it cannot close it either.

Start by recording three numbers for every building, each in days: Waiting to Start, In Production, and Final QC. If you want more detail, track each production stage and record where the handoff happens from one stage to the next. Measure Quality at Every Handoff

Time metrics tell you where the process slows down. Quality metrics tell you who is causing the slowdown. A manager may know intuitively that builder A does better work than builder B, but intuition does not say what builder B actually misses. Defect counts by stage do.

One shop ran quality control twice on every unit. The framing crew inspected its own work as the building left the framing area, and the roofing crew inspected the framing again before starting. Quality measurement only works when the crew knows what good looks like, and that knowledge has to be built deliberately. Set Goals the Crew Can Chase

Metrics without goals are just records. Set a target for completed sheds per day or per week, make it realistic, and add a stretch goal on top. The floor needs to hear the number. Set the goal with the crew, not for the crew:

  1. Agree on the number and the definition of done.

Friendly competition between teams works when the numbers are visible and the prize is worth something. Keep Materials on Hand

Reverse engineer the purchasing plan

Count what the shop used in the last 90 days, compare it to what was ordered, and find the items that ran out. Inventory control software helps, but a spreadsheet that tracks reorder points and lead times fixes most shops first.

Rework is a hidden materials cost. What to ask the building department

Get the rules in writing before the first unit ships. Some areas exempt small structures under a square-footage threshold. Others require a full permit and inspection. Keep the records simple: permit number, inspection date, and the unit serial number. When a customer calls about a cracked window or a failed door, the file tells you what was built and when. Finish Strong with Roof and Trim Checks

A checklist keeps the sign-off honest:

  • Windows open, close, and latch from inside and out.
  • Doors swing free, and the weatherstrip seals along the full edge.

  • The interior is clean, with sawdust blown out of every corner.
