Countertop Overhang: Measurements, Seating, and Support

The countertop overhang is the distance from the leading edge of the countertop to the front of the base cabinets. That inch or two does a lot of work: it keeps drips from running down the cabinet faces, hides the junction between countertop and cabinet, and lets someone standing at the counter get close enough to work comfortably.

The overhang also shapes how the countertop looks. The edge profile you choose changes the visual weight of that exposed lip: a squared edge reads crisp and modern, a bullnose reads soft, and a beveled edge catches light along the front.

Why Each Section Gets Its Own Number

  4. Check the countertop with a spirit level; a sloping surface changes the effective overhang.
  5. Record the smallest measurement, which governs clearance.

Weight, Support, and the Rule of Thumb

Quartz and granite support an 8 to 12 inch seating overhang when properly braced, laminate is usually limited to 6 inches unless reinforced, and butcher block can cantilever further because the wood has internal strength.   1. Install steel L-brackets every 24 to 36 inches along the run, screwed into the cabinet sides.
  2. Add a corbel at each end of a seating run.
  3. Use a support leg at the free corner of a peninsula.
  4. Verify the brackets are level before the countertop goes on.
