How to Design a Semi-Custom Cabinet Layout

Semi-custom cabinets are built to order from a manufacturer’s catalog of standard boxes, but the buyer chooses the size increments, door style, finish, and interior fittings. The three tiers differ in how the cabinet is made, not just how it looks. Stock cabinets are mass-produced in fixed sizes and finished in batches. Semi-custom adds size choices, door styles, and finish options within a standard box. Custom cabinets are built to the room, one piece at a time, by a shop or cabinetmaker.

Where the price difference goes

Semi-custom pricing usually lands 20 to 50 percent above comparable stock cabinets and 20 to 40 percent below custom. The premium buys better hardware, plywood boxes instead of particleboard, and the ability to fit a room without awkward gaps. Measuring the Space and Building the Grid

Every layout starts with accurate dimensions. Take the room measurement in three places per wall, at floor level, counter height, and ceiling height, because walls are rarely straight. Record the width, depth, and height of every opening, window, and door, plus the location of plumbing, electrical, and vent stacks.

Measure in this order:

  1. Wall-to-wall width at the floor, mid-wall, and top
  2. Floor-to-ceiling height at each corner and the middle
  3. Window and door rough openings, including trim widths
  4. Plumbing stub-outs, gas lines, and vent locations
  5. Floor slope, using a level or laser to find the high point

Work Zones and Traffic Patterns

A cabinet layout is a traffic plan first. The classic work triangle connects the sink, the cooktop, and the refrigerator, and the total of the three legs should stay under 26 feet with no leg shorter than 4 feet. Modern layouts add zones: prep, cooking, cleaning, and storage each get a dedicated run of cabinets.

In a small kitchen, give the prep zone the longest uninterrupted counter run. Put the dishwasher next to the sink, leave 15 to 18 inches of landing space beside the cooktop and refrigerator, and keep the trash pullout within arm’s reach of the prep area.

Corner cabinets deserve special attention in the zone plan. A blind corner cabinet with a lazy Susan or a pull-out swing shelf turns wasted corner footage into usable storage. Clearance rules to write into the layout:

  • 18 inches of clearance in front of the sink and cooktop
  • 30 inches minimum between the counter edge and an island
  • 24 inches of landing space beside the refrigerator
  • 2 inches of air space around the refrigerator for ventilation
  • Drawer fronts set back 1 inch from door fronts to avoid corner collisions
