Kitchen Design Lessons From a Timber Home’s Octagon Core

An octagon-shaped central core lends unusual curves to an already showstopping kitchen, and the room doubles as a lesson in mixing stone, wood and light. The kitchen sits inside a timber frame house, so every countertop, cabinet and fixture has to work under exposed Douglas fir beams. That constraint pushed the design toward materials with strong textures: a stone vent hood, a walnut island and backlit white cabinets. Before any of it was ordered, budgeting and cost estimation for kitchen remodeling set the range, and the finished room shows what that early planning buys.

Planning Around an Octagon Core

The octagon core gives the kitchen its unusual geometry. Instead of a straight run of cabinets against two walls, the room wraps its work zones around a central shape, and the angled walls create the curves that make the space memorable. The octagon also frames the view through to the great room, so the kitchen feels connected to the timber frame instead of sealed off from it.

Standard counter height is 36 inches, bar seating wants 42 inches, and an island that hosts both needs a tiered top or a careful compromise. One recurring question is whether attaching a kitchen table to an island that sits lower creates a better eat-in arrangement, and the answer depends on traffic, sight lines and how the family actually eats.

Island Height and Seating

Measure the overhang before ordering stools: 12 inches for a knee space, 15 to 18 inches for comfortable legroom, and more if the stool has arms. Live-edge tops change the math because the edge is never straight, so the seating overhang has to be measured at the shallowest point. The Stone Vent Hood and the Truss Illusion

The illusion works because the hood sits directly under the truss peak. The eye reads the stone column, the hood and the beam as one structural story even though the real load path runs through the frame. Sizing the Hood to the Cooktop

  3. Keep the duct run under 20 feet with few bends

Layering the Finishes

The finish recipe is a base of white, a warm accent, and one dense material that carries the texture. Here the white is the cabinets, the cinnamon is the backsplash, and the stone and walnut supply the density. Backlit Upper Cabinets

Backlit glass uppers need planning at rough-in. The driver and wiring go above the cabinet or in the toe kick, the glass gets a frosted or seeded finish to diffuse the light, and the switch belongs at the entry to the kitchen rather than inside the cabinet. Pick a warm color temperature around 2700 to 3000 Kelvin so the glow reads as daylight rather than a storefront.

Under-cabinet task lighting carries the prep work at night. Tape lights in a warm white finish mount near the front of the cabinet, hide behind a small valence, and run off a dimmer so the room can drop from bright work mode to a low evening glow. Recessed cans overhead then only need to fill the general light level.

Details That Tie the Kitchen to the House

The kitchen works because it borrows from the rooms around it. The stone of the hood echoes the fireplace materials, the walnut repeats in the dining furniture, and the white trim matches the trim language of the great room. That continuity is what separates a kitchen that belongs to a house from one that looks pasted in.

Coordinating the Trades

A kitchen like this is a coordination exercise. The stone hood needs structural support framed before the finish goes on, the island plumbing has to be stubbed before the slab, and the backlit cabinets need their electrical boxes before the drywall closes in. Custom stone and walnut carry lead times of four to eight weeks, so orders need to go out before the demo starts. The whole room depends on better planning and site coordination, because every custom piece has a lead time and every trade has a sequence. Build the schedule backward from the stone order, since the hood surround is the longest lead item in the room, and the electrician, plumber and cabinet installer each get a window instead of competing for the same wall.
