How to Paint Wrought Iron: Prep, Primer, and Finish

Wrought iron railings, fences, gates, and posts bring an elegant line to a home exterior, but no other common material takes more abuse from the weather. Heat, cold, rain, and road salt all attack the metal, and once rust starts it spreads under the paint film and lifts it away. A fresh coating is the fix that lets these pieces last for decades, and the job is a manageable weekend project on a railing, gate, or set of posts. The process starts before the paint can: you have to clean wrought iron and stop rust before it spreads, then prime with a metal-rated product and finish with two coats of enamel. What You Need Before You Start

Assemble the materials before the weather window opens. The essential list is short: an oil-based metal primer, oil-based enamel paint for metal, sandpaper in 80 to 120 grit, a wire brush, a paint scraper, a clean rag, mineral spirits, drop cloths, and a mask and gloves. A small brush and a can of spray primer cover most railings, and a roller or sprayer only becomes useful on long straight runs.

Applying Primer and Paint

Prime the bare metal the same day you finish prepping, before a new layer of rust forms. Shake the spray can for the time stated on the label and apply thin, even coats from about 10 to 12 inches away, letting each coat flash before the next. Keep the can moving and never hold it in one spot, or the primer will sag and run on vertical bars.

Most wrought iron lives outdoors, so paint when the weather is warm and dry. The paint requires temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity below 85 percent, and the metal must be dry before the first coat goes on. A washing day followed by a sunny, breezy stretch gives the best window, since the surface dries fully and the enamel cures evenly.

Give the paint at least a full day of dry weather after the final coat. A sudden shower on uncured enamel leaves water spots and can lift the film. If rain moves in, move the project under cover or postpone the second coat.

Brush vs. Spray: Choosing an Application Method

Both methods produce a good finish when the prep is right; the choice comes down to the shape of the piece and your setup. A brush gives control and needs no masking beyond the immediate area, while spray reaches into scrollwork and speeds up long runs of railing.

Even with a brush, drops land. Spread drop cloths, tape off hardware, and cover anything you do not want speckled. Clean up drips on glass or masonry while they are fresh.

Maintaining the Finish

A painted railing is not a permanent fix, but it is a long one. Inspect the iron once a year in spring: look for rust spots, chips where a gate slams, and worn areas at hand height. Catch problems while they are pinhead-sized, sand the spot, prime it, and touch it up the same day, and the surrounding finish will keep doing its job.
