Bathroom Rough-In Plumbing Dimensions: Toilets, Sinks, and Showers

Installing plumbing in a bathroom is rarely as hard as the rough-in stage. Rough-in is the phase when a plumber measures and marks fixture centerlines, drain heights, and clearances, then runs the water supply, drain, and vent lines behind walls and under floors before any finish material goes on. The work happens early in construction, often while the framing is still open, which means mistakes are inexpensive to fix now and expensive later. Standard rough-in measurements exist for toilets, sinks, bathtubs, and showers, and fixture manufacturers publish their own specifications; checking one against the other prevents misaligned drains and supply lines. What a Bathroom Plumbing Rough-In Includes

A rough-in covers everything that gets hidden by walls and floors. The plumber runs hot and cold supply lines from the main water valve to each fixture location, installs drain and vent lines from each fixture to the sewer or septic system, and routes vent stacks up through the roof. At the same time, the electrician runs wiring and the HVAC contractor places ductwork, so the rough-in phase is really a coordination exercise between trades. The order matters too: drains and vents are laid first, then supply lines, then electrical, so each trade has clear access to the wall cavities. Fixture locations follow the same logic as the rough openings and standard framing dimensions used for doors and windows: every opening has a reference point, and the measurement starts from a known surface.

Centerlines and reference points

A centerline is an imaginary vertical line drawn through a key point, such as the center of a drainpipe. When two pipes are specified 10 inches apart centerline to centerline, you measure from the center of one pipe to the center of the other, not between their edges. Most rough-in measurements use the finished wall or finished floor as the zero point, so it helps to know the thickness of tile, backer board, and drywall before marking anything.

Rough-in versus finish

Rough-in dimensions are measured to the finished wall, not the stud face. A 12-inch toilet rough-in means 12 inches from the finished wall surface to the center of the waste pipe. If the finish will add 1.5 inches with tile and backer board, the pipe must sit 13.5 inches from the stud face to land correctly.

Toilet Rough-In Dimensions

The most important toilet measurement is the rough-in: the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the floor flange. The standard is 12 inches, with 10-inch and 14-inch sizes available for tight or oversized spaces. Most toilets sold today fit a 12-inch rough-in, and measuring before you buy avoids the expensive mistake of ordering the wrong bowl. The waste pipe below the flange connects to the drain system, and the way plumbing trap types are configured in the drain line affects both flow and venting.

Clearances around the toilet

Codes and good design agree on the minimums:

  • 15 inches from the center of the toilet to a wall or vanity on either side
  • 21 inches of clear space in front of the bowl, with 24 inches more comfortable
  • 30 inches between the front of the toilet and any facing fixture

The supply line, usually a 1/2-inch connection with an angle stop, sits about 8 inches above the floor and 6 inches to the left or right of the toilet centerline, out of the way of the bowl but easy to reach for repairs. These clearances are minimums for code compliance, and adding a few extra inches makes the room easier to clean and more comfortable for users of all sizes.

Flange height and wax ring

The top of the flange should finish about 1/4 inch above the finished floor so the wax ring compresses when the toilet is set. If the flange sits flush with the floor or below it, water can pool around the base and the seal may fail. Set the flange height during the rough-in and recheck it after the floor finish is installed.

Sink Rough-In Dimensions

Sink rough-ins are measured to the drain and supply connections. For a standard vanity, the drain centerline is 18 to 22 inches above the finished floor, and the hot and cold supply lines are 20 to 22 inches up, spaced 4 inches apart center to center. The supply stubs extend about 4 inches out from the wall and end in shutoff valves, while the drain stub angles slightly downward through the wall. The rough-in phase of home construction coordinates these plumbing stubs with electrical outlets and HVAC registers in the same wall cavities.

Vanity sinks

A drop-in or undermount sink in a vanity works with the drain at 18 to 22 inches above the floor. The vanity cabinet itself is typically 32 to 36 inches tall, so the plumbing has to line up with the back of the cabinet, where the P-trap and supply lines tuck behind drawers. Measure the cabinet depth before roughing in the wall stubs, because a shallow vanity leaves no room for the trap to sit.

Wall-mounted and pedestal sinks

Wall-mounted sinks place the drain higher, at 30 to 36 inches, with supplies just below at 28 to 32 inches. ADA-compliant installations set the top of the sink rim at no more than 34 inches from the floor, and the drain rough-in must account for the carrier frame or support bracket hidden inside the wall. Pedestal sinks hide the plumbing inside the pedestal, which means the drain and supplies must align within a narrow footprint; measure the pedestal base before marking the wall, and confirm the wall construction during the rough-in because pedestal and wall-hung sinks need blocking inside the wall to support the fixture weight.

Shower and Bathtub Rough-In Dimensions

Showers and tubs have their own dimension sets. A shower needs a minimum interior of 32 by 32 inches, with 36 by 36 inches recommended for comfort, and the drain centers the pan. The shower valve sits 38 to 48 inches above the floor, and the shower head is 72 to 80 inches up, usually 78 inches. The drain line uses 2-inch pipe with the proper slope to the trap, which sits directly under the pan. Shower drains also need a 2-inch trap and a cleanout within reach, and curbless designs require the floor to slope to the drain before the waterproofing layer goes down. Bathtub dimensions

For an alcove tub, the drain and overflow connect at the tub’s built-in fittings, and the supply valves for the tub faucet sit about 8 inches above the tub rim, with the spout 4 to 6 inches above the rim. The tub itself must sit on a level base before the drain is connected, and most tubs require a 2-inch drain line with a vent within reach.

Venting requirements

Every trap needs a vent to keep sewer gases out and let water flow freely. A shower or tub drain can share a vent with a nearby lavatory if the distances stay within code limits, but a toilet usually gets its own vent. Vent pipes run vertically through the roof or tie into a wet vent system, and they must be sized and routed during the rough-in, not added later.

Pipe Materials and Connections

Rough-in work also means choosing materials. Supply lines are typically copper, PEX, or CPVC: copper is durable and heat-tolerant but costs more and takes more labor, PEX bends around obstacles and installs fast with crimp or expansion fittings, and CPVC is inexpensive but more brittle. Drain lines use PVC, ABS, or cast iron; PVC is the common choice for new residential work, and cast iron appears in high-end and commercial jobs for its sound-deadening properties. Supply versus drain sizing

Slope and support rules

Drain lines slope 1/4 inch per foot toward the stack, and horizontal runs need support every 4 feet for 2-inch pipe and every 5 feet for 3-inch and larger pipe. Vertical supply lines get secured at intervals to prevent water hammer, and every penetration through a stud or joist needs a nail plate or sleeve to protect the pipe from later fasteners.

Tips for a Smooth Rough-In

A smooth rough-in starts with a plan on paper. Measure the room, mark every fixture centerline on the floor, and tape the dimensions to the studs before the plumber arrives. Order the fixtures early or at least get their spec sheets, because a vanity with a 4-inch center faucet set has different supply spacing than an 8-inch widespread set. Before the walls close

  1. Pressure-test the supply lines and air-test or flood-test the drains
  2. Photograph every wall and floor before insulation and drywall go in
  3. Label each supply and drain line with its fixture
