Every house carries zones that look impossible to use: the wedge under the stairs, the band of air above kitchen cabinets, the triangular attic space behind knee walls. For a two-week project, renting the tool and returning it beats owning and storing it.
When Dead Space Fixes Meet a Bigger Remodel
Dead space work pays off best when it is scheduled with the remodel it touches. An open plan remodeling project that raises roofs and pulls in natural light can absorb an attic conversion or a kitchen stack into the same permit, the same trades, and the same cleanup.

Measure the space, price the materials, add 15 to 20 percent for surprises, then decide what you will do yourself. Labor is the biggest line in any built-in, so the projects that make sense for a DIY owner are shelving and cabinets, while electrical and structural work stays with licensed trades.
Get two quotes for anything you are not building yourself. Built-ins from a cabinet shop cost two to three times what the materials would cost in a home center, but they use the cavity fully. A good middle path is a plywood cabinet carcass with a shop-built face frame and doors.
