How to Protect Plants From Frost: Covers, Hoop Tunnels, and Timing

Frost ends growing seasons without warning, and it is the reason many gardeners lose tomatoes, peppers, and tender annuals every fall. The damage happens at the plant level: moisture freezes on leaf surfaces, ice crystals puncture cell walls, and tissue collapses as it thaws. Early autumn frosts cut harvests short, late spring frosts kill buds on early blooming shrubs and trees, and a single arctic air dip can wipe out crops in warmer zones where freezing weather is rare. Build Hoop Tunnels and Frames

Track your local frost dates

The average last spring frost and first fall frost define the safe window for tender plants.
