Lawns live or die by what happens under the surface. Compacted soil squeezes out the pore space that roots need for air and water, so the grass thins, weeds move in, and puddles linger after every rain. Core aeration breaks the cycle by pulling plugs of soil out of the turf so air, water, and nutrients can reach the root zone again. Why spikes can backfire

On clay, spike aeration compresses the soil around each hole, which can tighten the compaction it is supposed to fix.
