Fireplace Maintenance: Inspection, Creosote Control, and Safe Burning

A fireplace or wood-burning stove rewards attention before the first cold night. Wood-burning devices should be checked periodically and cleaned according to use, whether they run every day or once a year. Firewood dries fastest when it is split to 4 to 6 inches, stacked in single rows, and covered on top while the sides stay open to the wind. Wood stored against the house invites pests and traps moisture against the siding, so keep the stack at least a foot off the wall.

Building and Running the Fire

  1. Open the damper and confirm the flue draws with a lit match or piece of paper at the opening.
  2. Build the fire top-down: large splits on the bottom, kindling above, and paper on top.
  3. Keep a moderate fire, hot enough to keep the flue liner warm but not hot enough to ignite creosote already formed.
  4. Burn smaller loads completely instead of smothering a big load overnight.

Gas Units Need Their Own Checks

Leak Checks and Components

Check the unit’s components for leaks or damage and replace worn parts immediately. Even a cursory inspection reduces the risk of future mishaps: look at the supply line, the shutoff valve, the burner ports, and the ignition assembly. If you smell natural gas with the unit on or off, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

Detectors and Alarms

Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level and test them monthly.
