Sunscreen is the most practical control available to a crew, but only when the right product is chosen, applied in the right amount, and reapplied on schedule. Why Outdoor Workers Carry the Highest UV Risk

Construction and outdoor trades concentrate exposure in the hours when UV is strongest. The UV index peaks between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which is exactly when most site work happens. Open sites rarely offer shade, and surfaces like fresh concrete, asphalt, and gravel reflect ultraviolet light back onto the skin, so a worker standing in an open lot takes radiation from above and below at the same time.

The most common skin cancers, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, develop over years of accumulated exposure. That is why the disease appears most often on the head, neck, ears, forearms, and hands, the areas a typical worker leaves uncovered. Melanoma is less common but far more dangerous, and it is the form most strongly linked to intense, intermittent sunburn.

How Much Sunscreen You Actually Need

  • Fragrance-free versions help workers with sensitive skin and anyone who wears a respirator, since strong scents can irritate.
  • Bottles that survive a truck: pumps and tubes hold up better than squeeze tubes left in direct sun.

Terms like dermatologist tested describe a process, not a performance standard, so treat them as weak signals. The label facts that matter are SPF, broad spectrum, water resistance, and the active ingredient list.

Building a Sun Safety Routine That Crews Will Actually Follow

Sunscreen works best as the last layer of a system, not the only layer. Shade, clothing, and scheduling do most of the work, and sunscreen fills the gaps. Long-sleeve shirts with a UPF rating block more ultraviolet light than any lotion, wide-brim hats protect the ears and neck better than baseball caps, and UV-blocking safety glasses shield the eyes and eyelids.

A routine that fits a 10-hour shift:

  1. Before the shift: apply a base layer of lotion at home or at the trailer, including the ears and neck.
  2. Mid-morning break: reapply to the face and forearms, and check that hats and glasses are still on.
  3. Lunch: reapply everywhere, because the skin has been sweating for hours.
  4. Mid-afternoon: one more pass on exposed areas, since UV stays strong until 4 p.m.
  5. End of day: wash off the sunscreen and check the skin for new spots or burns.

Keep the Product Usable

Heat destroys sunscreen filters faster than age does. A bottle left in a closed truck cab or on a dashboard can lose most of its effectiveness within weeks while the texture still feels normal. Store sunscreen in a cooler or a shaded trailer, and check the expiration date, usually about three years from manufacture. If the texture separates or the smell turns, replace the bottle.
