Not every plant needs premium soil. Ornamentals and tough native species can thrive in thin, rocky, or sandy ground that would starve a vegetable crop. But when the goal is a productive edible garden, a lush lawn, or dependable flower beds, soil quality decides the outcome. The same holds on construction sites, where the ground is evaluated before anything is built; the factors that influence the quality of undisturbed soil samples apply just as much to a raised bed as to a building pad. Landscapers and grading contractors build their bids around the same assessment, because rework from poor soil costs time and money. Five Signs of High-Quality Soil

The more of these signs you find, the better the soil is likely to be. One good trait does not make up for the others; a soil can be dark and still drain poorly, or crumbly and still lifeless.

  2. Good tilth: the soil is crumbly, holds together when squeezed, and breaks apart easily.
  3. Dark color: a deep brown or black tone signals a healthy organic matter content.

For drainage, dig a hole about 12 inches deep and wide, fill it with water, and let it drain completely. Refill and time the second drain. A drop of 1 to 2 inches per hour indicates balanced drainage; much faster means sandy soil that will dry out fast, and much slower means compaction or heavy clay.
