Orientation decides how much of that light is useful. South-facing skylights flood the room in winter but can overheat it in summer, while north-facing glass delivers steady, even light with almost no glare. Operable units placed high on the roof let warm air escape in the evening, which matters in a room where heat collects at the top of the house.
Location and Proportion in the Great Room
Where the loft sits in the plan decides how the whole house feels. Lofts can hang over the kitchen or sit beside the bedrooms as a reading lounge, but the most common choice is to overlook the great room and its large windows. That placement gives the loft the best view and keeps the owner visually connected to the main floor.

With the use defined, the walls placed, the light planned, and the budget set, the loft stops being leftover space and starts being one of the most-used rooms in the house.
