Cut the Case Pieces and Box Joints

Cut Order
- Crosscut the sides, top, and bottom to final length
- Rip the dividers to width, then cut them to length
- Lay out the joint positions with a marking gauge so the fingers line up
- Cut the box joints, then sand every face before the glue-up
Set Up a Box Joint Jig
A box joint is a row of matching fingers cut across the end of a board. With a jig on the router table or table saw the process becomes repeatable: cut a slot, move the piece over one finger width, cut again, and repeat. On 3/4-inch stock, 3/8-inch fingers look balanced and cut fast. Always test on scrap before touching the case pieces, because the first setup pass almost always needs a tweak.
Run the router or dado stack at a steady feed rate and keep the work piece pressed against the fence. Box joint cuts produce a lot of small waste pieces; clear them between passes so a trapped chip cannot shift the board and ruin the spacing.
