Picture frames are one of the most satisfying beginner woodworking projects you can take on. The material list fits in one trip to the lumberyard, the tool list is short, and the finished piece protects something you care about instead of sitting on a shelf. Before making the first cut, it helps to see the project as part of a larger construction family. The word frame appears all over building, from the braced frames and moment resisting frames that carry structural loads down to the small wooden rectangle that carries a photograph. The habits that make a good frame at either scale are the same: respect the geometry, measure twice, and let the joints do the work. Picture frames also deliver a lot of value for the money, which is why they keep appearing in beginner plans and shop class projects.
The Math of Frame Openings
The first number to get right is the size of the opening, because everything else hangs off it. For a typical frame, the actual opening runs half an inch smaller than the nominal value. An 11×14 frame, for example, has an actual opening of 10.5 by 13.5 inches. That half inch creates a ledge, called a rabbet, that the glass, mat, and backing sit on instead of falling through the front of the frame.
Structural engineers use the same nominal versus actual discipline at building scale when they sort moment frames and braced frames in structural engineering by how they carry loads. The geometry drawn on paper has to translate into real dimensions on site, and the same rule holds at the workbench: the math you do before cutting decides whether the glass sits flush or rattles loose.
Nominal Versus Actual Sizing
Photo sizes and lumber sizes both come in nominal values that differ from their real dimensions. A 1×2 board measures 0.75 by 1.5 inches after planing, and an 11×14 photo is meant to sit inside an opening that actually measures 10.5 by 13.5. When you cut the mat window, take one more small step down: the window should overlap the image by about an eighth to a quarter of an inch on each side so the print never falls through.
Why the Half Inch Rule
The half inch is not arbitrary. A standard setup stacks glass, mat board, and backing inside the rabbet. Glass runs about 0.09 to 0.1 inch thick, mat board about 0.06 to 0.12, and backing about 0.1 to 0.2, and the stack adds up fast. A rabbet cut 0.375 to 0.5 inch deep leaves room for the stack plus a little clearance for the points that hold everything in.

Wood, Glass, and Matting Choices
Oak in a 1×2 profile is a classic frame material because it machines cleanly, takes stain evenly, and stays stable as indoor humidity changes. Poplar is cheaper and paints well, walnut delivers a dark furniture look without any stain, and maple suits light modern interiors. Whatever species you pick, buy boards that are straight and free of large knots near the ends, because the corner joints concentrate every bit of stress.
Reading Glass Like a Window
A framed picture with a glass front is functionally a small window. The same principles that let windows act as picture frames for the view outside apply indoors: light transmission, reflection, and how the surface reads from across the room. Standard glass is the cheapest option, non-glare glass softens reflections in bright rooms, and acrylic is lighter and safer for large or high-mounted frames.
Matting and Hardware
Mat board does more than decorate. It keeps the glass off the artwork, gives the eye breathing room, and lets one standard frame size fit many image sizes, so use acid-free board for anything you want to keep. On the hardware side, a V-nail gun or manual V-nails reinforce the miter joints, wood glue does the primary bonding, and a water-based clear coat such as polycrylic protects the finished frame without yellowing.

Frame Styles and Display Techniques
The simplest frame is a single mitered rectangle, but the same joinery supports a wide range of styles. Double mats add depth to a single image, multi-opening frames group several small photos in one piece, and gallery walls let you mix frames that share a color or profile so the group reads as one composition.
Floating Frames
A floating picture frame holds the artwork between two panes of glass or suspends it over the backing with a visible gap, so the print appears to hover inside the frame. The style suits canvas prints, thick watercolor paper, and any piece with an edge worth showing. Build the same frame you would for a standard piece, then add a spacer strip around the inside of the rabbet to create the gap.
Planning the Gallery Wall
Before hanging a group, lay the frames out on the floor in the arrangement you want. Keep the gaps between frames consistent, usually 2 to 4 inches, and start with the largest piece. Use a laser level or a long straightedge, and hang the center of the group at eye height, about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
Matting, Backing, and Specialty Displays
Behind the artwork, the backing and the dust seal do the long-term protection work. Cut the backing board to the exact opening size, insert glass, mat, and image in that order, and fold points or small brads over the backing to hold the stack in place. A strip of kraft tape around the back edge seals out dust and insects.
Shadow Boxes for Depth
Flat frames cannot hold objects with real thickness. Shadow box picture frames add the extra depth, and the display ideas range from medals and keys to baby shoes and dried flowers. Pick the depth based on the thickest object, then plan the layout so nothing touches the glass.
Protecting the Artwork
Keep every material that touches the artwork acid-free. UV-filtering glass or acrylic slows fading on sunny walls, and a spacer between art and glass prevents condensation from sticking the print to the pane. In humid rooms, add a small desiccant pack behind the backing board.

- Add the backing board and press the stack flat.
- Fold points over the backing on each side.
- Tape the back edge and attach the hanging hardware.
Cutting, Joinery, and Finishing
Mitered corners start with 45-degree cuts on each rail. For a frame with an opening of W by H and a rail width of R, each long side measures W plus 2 times R at the long point, and each short side measures H plus 2 times R. Cut the miters slightly long, test-fit the corners, and sneak up on the final size with a few passes on a shooting board.
Joinery for Frame Corners
Glue does the real work at the corners, and V-nails or splines stop the joint from sliding while the glue cures. Clamp each corner with a band clamp or corner clamps and check for square with a framing square before the glue sets. On wide frames, add a spline across the miter for extra strength.
Finishing Sequence and Hanging
Sand through 120, 180, and 220 grit, then wipe the frame clean of dust. Two or three thin coats of polycrylic with a light sand between coats give a durable surface that will not yellow. Attach the hangers about a third of the way down each side, run picture wire between them, and use a wall anchor rated for the finished weight.
Frames do more than protect a print; they control where the eye lands. Architects borrow the same idea when they design windows as picture frames to frame a view, and a well-placed wall frame does the same job for a room: it gives the eye a stopping point and the wall a center of gravity.
Once hung, the frame becomes a small structure carrying its own weight and resisting the racking forces of slamming doors and flexing floors.
