A cutting board is the ideal first woodworking project. It uses a small amount of material, forgives minor mistakes, and produces something you will use every day in the kitchen. The skills you practice here, from accurate ripping to a clean glue-up, carry directly into larger furniture builds. Pick the Right Wood

Hardwood vs. Softwood
Hardness is measured on the Janka scale, which reports the force needed to embed a steel ball into the wood. A higher number means more resistance to knife marks, dents, and moisture damage, which is exactly what a cutting surface needs.
When you shop the scrap bin or the hardwood rack, look for stock that will stay stable through the glue-up:
- Flat, dry boards with straight grain, avoiding twists and deep checks

Prepare the Shop and the Blades
Cold shops change how tools cut. Choose the Board Style

Edge Grain vs. End Grain

Plan the Pattern
Mix light and dark species for contrast. Maple, padauk, and walnut produce the classic striped board, and a repeating pattern of five to seven strips reads as an intentional design. Keep the outer strips in the same species so the edges frame the pattern. Cut the Strips Accurately
Strip width sets the look of the board. Most boards use strips between 1 and 2 inches wide, and 1-1/2 inches is a safe middle ground. A table saw rips the straightest strips, but a circular saw with a guide rail works if you set the fence once and leave it.
Set Up the Saw
Set the fence, confirm the blade is square to the table, and rip all the strips without changing the setup. Cutting every strip at the same width makes the glue-up flat and the pattern even. Keep the Saw Accurate

Cut to Length and Arrange the Pattern
With the strips ripped, the next decisions are length and order. Both are easier to get right before any glue is open.
Cut Oversize on Purpose
Cut the strips longer than the finished board. The ends get trimmed square after the glue dries, and an extra 2 inches per strip gives you room to cut off squeeze-out and any tear-out left by the saw. Mark and Arrange the Pieces
Lay the strips in the pattern you want, then number them with a pencil so the order survives the trip to the glue bench. A pattern that looks balanced on the bench stays balanced if every piece is numbered. Glue, Flatten, and Trim

Clamp from the top and the bottom to keep the panel flat in the clamps. Edge-only clamping lets the strips cup into a slight curve. Wipe excess glue with a damp cloth before it skins over. Fill Knots and Voids
Knots, beetle holes, and cracks get filled with epoxy before flattening. Tape the underside of a void, pour epoxy level with the surface, and let it cure. The filler cuts flush in the flattening step.
Flatten with a Reference Surface
A planer needs a flat reference to produce a flat board. Hot-glue the board to a sheet of MDF or plywood, run the assembly through the planer to surface one face, then remove the MDF and flip the board. The surfaced face becomes the reference for the second pass.

Trim Ends and Round Corners
Square the ends with a chop saw or a circular saw and straightedge. A router with a chamfer bit cuts a 45-degree corner around the edges, which softens the look and sheds crumbs.
Sand, Finish, and Maintain
Sanding and oiling turn a flat board into a finished one. Both steps reward patience more than pressure.
Sand Through the Grits
Sand at 80, then 120, then 220 grit. Wet-sand the final passes: wetting raises the grain, and knocking it down leaves a surface that stays smooth after washing. Wipe the board clean between grits and work with the grain. Apply Mineral Oil
