Distilled white vinegar has become a default cleaner for homeowners who want fewer chemical sprays in the house. The acetic acid in it dissolves grease, soap scum, and mineral deposits, which is why it shows up in routines far beyond floors, including the vinegar descaling process for coffee makers. Used correctly, vinegar cleans most floors for pennies per gallon. Used carelessly, it can etch stone, dull hardwood, and leave a sticky residue.

Grout is porous and collects the grime vinegar cuts best. A full tile floor cleaning routine pairs a vinegar mop with a soft brush on grout lines, followed by a clean-water rinse so residue does not redeposit. For heavy buildup, let the solution sit for 5 minutes before scrubbing.
A microfiber flat mop with a removable pad works better than a string mop on tile, because the pad lifts grime instead of pushing it into the grout joints. Rinse the pad between rooms.
