How to Cut Drywall: Scoring, Snapping, and Saw Methods

Drywall, also called sheetrock, is a gypsum core sandwiched between two layers of heavy paper. That construction makes it easy to cut with a sharp utility knife, so a homeowner can finish interior walls without hiring a contractor. A typical cut takes two to five minutes and costs a few cents in blade wear, with the whole project running $5 to $10 in supplies for a room. Standard sheets measure 4 by 8 feet and weigh about 50 to 70 pounds, which is why planning cuts before lifting is half the battle. For openings such as electrical boxes, cordless drywall cut out saws and other specialty power tools speed up the work, but they are optional: the same holes come out clean with a hand saw.

What You Need Before Cutting

Assemble the tools before you touch a sheet. A utility knife with fresh blades, a drywall square or long straightedge, a tape measure, a pencil, and a drywall saw cover nearly every cut you will make. Work with at least 3 feet of clearance around the sheet so you can pivot it without hitting walls or furniture. If you are patching a painted wall, review taping new drywall to existing painted drywall first so the patch blends with the old surface and the joint line disappears.

Cutting a Full Sheet with a Utility Knife

The score and snap method is the fastest way to cut a straight line across a full sheet. Mark the measurement at both ends, set the square across the face, and run the knife along the edge of the square two or three times to slice through the paper. The gypsum core breaks along the scored line, and you finish by cutting the back paper. Some pros prefer another way to cut drywall that uses a shallow blade angle, but the result is the same clean break with almost no dust.

Mark the Cut Line

Measure from the factory edge, which is straight, rather than from a cut edge. Mark the length at both ends of the sheet, then set the drywall square against the two marks. For cuts longer than the square, clamp a straightedge or snap a chalk line across the face. A pencil line is enough; the knife does not need a deep guide groove.

Score and Snap

Press the knife firmly and drag it along the square in one continuous pass. Repeat two or three times; the goal is a clean slice through the face paper, not a deep groove. Lift the sheet, place the scored line over a straight support such as a scrap 2×4, and press down sharply on the overhanging side. The core snaps cleanly along the line. Work the break from one end to the other rather than pushing in the middle.

Cutting Depth

Score only the face paper, about 1/16 inch deep. Cutting deeper roughens the core and weakens the edge. If the break wanders off line, the score was not deep enough or the sheet was not supported directly under the line. Fresh blades matter: a dull knife tears the paper instead of slicing it.

Finish the Back Paper

With the sheet bent along the break, slide the knife along the V-shaped crack to cut the back paper. One pass is usually enough. Set the piece upright and check the edge; a light pass with a rasp removes paper fuzz and minor core lumps before the panel goes on the wall. Hold the knife at a low angle so it follows the crack without digging into the face.

Cutting Drywall on Edge

Narrow strips, such as fillers above doors or patches between existing panels, are easier to cut with the sheet standing on edge. Set the sheet vertically, mark the width at both ends, and score the face paper with a straightedge. Snap the strip away with a quick push, then cut the back paper. Edge cutting works best for strips narrower than about 12 inches, where a full-sheet snap is awkward. After the strip is hung, taping drywall joints seals the seam between new panel and existing wall so the repair disappears.

When Edge Cutting Makes Sense

Use the on-edge method for rips, fillers, and any cut where the waste piece is small enough to handle with one hand. It also helps in tight rooms where a full sheet cannot lie flat. The motion is the same scoring and snapping sequence, rotated 90 degrees, and it leaves a straighter edge on narrow strips than a freehand knife cut.

Finishing the Cut Edge

Cut edges are rougher than factory edges, so dress them before installation. Run a rasp or 100 grit sandpaper along the cut, then knock off loose gypsum with the back of the knife. A clean edge makes the joint compound work easier and prevents shadows under paint. Do the same to any cut that will sit at a visible corner.

Cutting Holes with a Drywall Saw

For holes, door cutouts, and notches, a drywall saw, sometimes called a jab saw or keyhole saw, is the standard tool. Its pointed tip punches through the panel without a pilot hole, and the coarse teeth cut fast on the pull stroke. If you do not own one, a stand-in for a jab saw such as a sharp utility knife in a series of plunge cuts works in a pinch, though it takes longer and leaves a rougher edge.

Plunge Cuts and Rough Openings

Mark the opening on the face paper, then drive the saw tip through the center of the waste area. Cut outward to each corner of the layout line, keeping the blade perpendicular to the face. Saw on the pull stroke and let the teeth do the work; pushing hard tears the paper and splinters the edge. Cut slightly inside the line and rasp out to the mark for a cleaner result.

Door and Window Cutouts

For full openings, cut the panel face down with the layout transferred to the back, or score the outline first and saw from the face. Support the sheet so the cutout piece does not drop and crack the remaining panel. Enlist a helper for large cutouts, because the waste piece can weigh 10 to 15 pounds and pull the sheet out of square as it falls.

Cutouts for Electrical Boxes and Other Openings

Receptacle, switch, and light fixture openings are the most common hole cuts on a job. Measure the box location, transfer it to the panel, and cut the opening with a drywall saw or a rotary cutout tool. When the box is already mounted, smear lipstick or chalk on its face and press the panel into place; the outline transfers exactly, saving a round of measuring.

Measure from the floor to the bottom and top of the box, and from the nearest corner to both sides. Transfer those dimensions to the panel, add about 1/8 inch of clearance on each side, and draw the rectangle. For remodel boxes, press the panel against the box with marking compound on the rim. Check the drawing against the box twice before cutting; an electrical opening cut wrong means a patch and a second sheet.

Curved and Irregular Openings

Arches, pipe collars, and decorative niches call for the same saw with a tighter turning radius. Cut a series of short plunge cuts along the curve, then connect them with the blade. Managing Dust and Cleanup

Cutting gypsum throws fine dust that settles on every surface in the room. Score and snap cuts on full sheets produce almost no dust, which is one reason pros prefer them for straight lines. Saw cuts create more. A shop vacuum held at the cut, or a water bath vacuum separator on the vac intake, keeps most of the dust out of the air. The separator traps gypsum in water so the filter stays clean and the fines do not recirculate.

After the Cuts

Stack cut pieces flat, never on edge, so they do not bow. Sweep or vacuum the floor before hanging panels, because gypsum dust under a sheet makes it sit proud of the studs. Replace dull blades at the first sign of tearing, and store leftover sheets flat in a dry space. A small pile of scored scrap is worth keeping for test cuts and patch pieces on the next job.
