How to Use Drywall Anchors: Types, Weight Ratings, and Installation

Drywall anchors let you hang shelves, pictures, cabinets, and light fixtures on walls where no wood stud lines up with the mounting holes. Plain screws pull out of gypsum board under surprisingly small loads because the board crumbles around the threads. Why Hollow Drywall Needs an Anchor

Gypsum board is a brittle core sandwiched between two paper faces. A screw driven directly into it holds only until the paper tears or the core crushes, which can happen at loads under 10 pounds depending on screw size and board thickness. Sleeve Anchors

The sleeve anchor is a straight plastic tube with a flange. You push it into a pilot hole and drive the screw, and the screw spreads the body open against the back of the drywall. It is the cheapest option and works fine for picture frames and small mirrors. The thin plastic body can crack if the screw is overtightened or if the load moves, so keep it to light duty.

Threaded Corkscrew Anchors

Match the anchor to the real load, not the size of the item. A heavy mirror in a thin frame still weighs 30 pounds, so it needs a wing anchor or a stud. Add the weight of everything the shelf will hold, then pick an anchor rated for at least 1.5 times that total to leave a safety margin.

Light Loads Under 20 Pounds

Small pictures, switch plates, and lightweight decor stay within sleeve-anchor range. A sleeve anchor is adequate here, but a corkscrew anchor costs about the same and holds more than twice as much, so many installers skip straight to the corkscrew type for anything above a few pounds. The extra capacity costs nothing and gives you room to change what you hang later.

Medium Loads From 20 to 100 Pounds

Shelves, towel bars, light cabinets, and mirrors fall into the corkscrew and wing-anchor range. Installation Steps for Each Anchor Type

Installation differs by type, but every method starts the same way: mark the hole, confirm nothing is behind the wall with a stud finder, and drill with the correct bit size. Hold the drill square to the wall so the anchor seats perpendicular to the surface.

Install a Sleeve Anchor

  1. Mark the mounting hole and drill a pilot hole the diameter of the sleeve body
  2. Tap the sleeve flush with the wall using a hammer
  3. Drive the screw through the fixture and into the sleeve until snug

  1. Drill a small pilot hole or press the point into the drywall
  2. Turn the anchor clockwise with a screwdriver until the flange touches the paper

  1. Drill a hole sized for the folded wings
  2. Push the anchor through the wall until the wings spring open
  3. Pull back gently to seat the wings against the back of the drywall

  5. Tighten until the fixture is snug, then stop

Removing Anchors and Patching the Wall

Anchors are meant to stay in the wall, but removal is straightforward when you need to move a fixture, repaint, or patch a hole. Work slowly so you do not enlarge the opening.

Removal Methods by Anchor Type

  • Sleeve anchors: drive the screw partway out, then pull the anchor with pliers or push it into the wall cavity
  • Corkscrew anchors: back them out counterclockwise with a screwdriver once the screw is removed
  • Wing anchors: unscrew the bolt, push the wings into the cavity, and patch the hole
  • Stubborn metal anchors: drill them out or cut them flush and cover with a patch

Pushing an anchor into the wall cavity is faster than prying it out and avoids enlarging the hole.
