Preparing Garden Soil for Growing Roses: pH, Texture, and Enrichment

Roses have a reputation as fragile plants, but most rose problems start in the soil. Well-prepared ground lets roots establish quickly, keeps water moving at the right pace, and prevents the stress that invites disease. Gardeners who skip soil prep and plant straight into packed clay or builder’s sand fight the same losing battle all season. The soil properties that engineers study before choosing a foundation, texture, density, drainage, and chemistry, are the same ones a gardener weighs before planting a rose. Test Your Soil Before You Amend Anything

A soil test answers three questions: what the pH is, what nutrients are present, and what the texture looks like. Testing costs between $10 for a home kit and $40 for a laboratory analysis through a county extension office, and it prevents the most common mistake, adding lime or fertilizer the soil never needed. How to Take a Soil Sample
