How to Clean a Pool Filter: Cartridge, Sand, and DE Maintenance

Every open pool eventually needs its filter cleaned, no matter how often it gets used. Sand eventually wears smooth and loses its ability to trap particles, usually after 5 to 7 years. Replacing the sand means draining the tank, removing the top assembly, and vacuuming out the old media before adding fresh sand to the correct fill level.
